Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the famous Decameron that has crucially marked the history of literature, has often been addressed as obscene, licentious, even immoral. But what did he really think about women, which are a recurring theme in his production? Starting from an analysis of the society in medieval Tuscany, Monika Antes discusses in detail the Elegy of Madonna Fiammetta, the Corbaccio and the Decameron itself, to show differences and similarities between the female figures depicted in these works. Tracing the biography of Boccaccio, the essay shows the complex evolution in his relationship with women, in which admiration and respect are sometimes replaced by harsh misogyny.
